Gone are the days when we would simply put the silk pillowcases into the washing machine and hope for the best. Silk pillowcases demand more delicate hand-washing methods, but it is not as hard as you thought. Read through this guide with video instruction on how to hand-wash your silk pillowcase.
FIVE GOLDEN RULES FOR HAND-WASHING SILK
- Check the fabric care label before washing
Before washing any clothing or bedding items, it is a good idea to read the label. All LILYSILK pillowcases come with a care label attached inside. Carefully read through them first before you start washing your pillowcase. Doing so can help you avoid creating felted jumpers, turning formerly white sheets pink, or shrinking queen size into double.
- Only wash in cold water (<= lukewarm water 30°C/86°F)
Washing your silk pillowcases in hot water will damage them. We recommend using cold water (<= lukewarm water 30°C/86°F) to clean your silk pillowcase. Take the silk pillowcase and gently plunge it up and down in cold water to move the water through the fabric and wash out any dirt or residue. This motion simulates the motion of a washing machine but is much more gentle.
- Use neutral or special detergent
We recommend TENESTAR as the brand of specialized silk cleaner agents for our products. Woolite and other mild detergents can also be used. All-purpose detergents such asTide, All, Wisk, etc. contain caustic chemicals harmful to silk fibers. Remember to rinse the pillowcases under the clean water till it runs clear, and wash out all the detergent soap suds.
- Avoid direct sunlight exposure
Direct sunlight can damage silk as it is a natural fiber, as it contains the same protein that our hair is made of, and it bleaches and breaks down in sunlight. Then hang it dry if possible without prolonged direct sun exposure.
- Avoid Ironing or use cold iron only
We do not recommend ironing silk. If you still prefer to iron, we recommend doing so on the lowest temperature and inside out to avoid burning the silk fibers. Silk bedding will wrinkle after drying but should straighten after a night or two of use. Pro tip: Placing the silk on your bed while it is still slightly damp will eliminate wrinkles.
